Presbyterian missionaries first reached Hualien in 1890 when George Leslie Mackay sailed from Su’ao. A formal congregation was established at Jialiwan in 1907 and relocated to central Hualien around 1910. The current reinforced concrete church on Zhongshan Road was completed in 1961 after the previous structure was destroyed in the 1951 earthquake.
