Completed in 1943 to support the Japanese Navy and their need for fuel during World War 2, it never produced at full capacity before it was extensively bombed by allied forces. After the war the remaining structures, most of them roofless, were appropriated for use as a military dependents’ village. The village was only depopulated in the 2010s, revealing an incredible arrangement of homes inside the body of the factory itself. It was designated a historic site and as of 2024 is still under renovation.
