A sandstone stele in the Tayal village of Sqiy (志繼) in Fuxing, erected between 1937 and 1939 to commemorate the excavation of the village irrigation canal during the Japanese colonial era. Its inscription, written by the police chief of Daxi District (大溪郡), invokes the “self-reliance” campaign promoted by Prime Minister Saitō Makoto (齋藤實) from 1932, under which Tayal communities were forcibly settled, inhibited from traditional hunting, and encouraged to take up wet-rice cultivation. A similar monument marks the canal on the nearby Xikou Terrace.
