Nanxi Village (南溪里) in Dongshan lies at the heart of Taiwan’s main longan-producing region. An alley leading into the hills southeast of the village is lined with nearly eighty earthen kilns used to roast longan, part of as many as 770 scattered across the district. The week-long roasting cycle and its accompanying rituals are the subject of an ongoing cultural landscape registration effort by the Tainan City Cultural Affairs Bureau.
