Founded in 1913, during the Japanese colonial era, as the Chiayi factory of Niitaka Sugar (新高製糖株式會社), with a daily crushing capacity of 1,600 tonnes. Dai-Nippon Sugar absorbed the company in 1935, and after the war the plant in Dalin was nationalized under Taiwan Sugar Corporation. Sugar production ended in July 1995. Part of the site now houses a Taisugar biotechnology plant, and as of 2024 some effort is being undertaken to transform the rest into a tourist attraction.
