Established in 1927 as Hokukō-za (北港座), this historic building was the first theater constructed in Beigang during the Japanese colonial period. Local businessman Gong Pichan (龔丕趁) invested in the project, which began construction in February 1927 and was completed in June, though the official opening ceremony wasn’t held until September.
After 1945, the theater continued operating but underwent two major renovations—first to the front section in March 1964, and then to the main theater hall in November 1966—which completely transformed its original appearance. The theater remained in business until 1992, after which it sat idle for many years before being restored and reopened as a multi-function event space, though the exterior now reveals little of the building’s century-long history.
