A monumental archway (牌樓) at the entrance to what is now known as Liberty Square. Originally inscribed with “Great Center to Righteousness” (大中至正) using characters from Chiang Kai-shek’s name, the inscription was changed to “Liberty Square” (自由廣場) in 2007 as part of Taiwan’s transitional justice efforts. The 240,000-square-meter plaza played a pivotal role in Taiwan’s democratization, notably hosting the Wild Lily student movement of 1990 that helped usher in political transformation.
