Originally completed in 1901 as the official residence of the Governor-General of Taiwan, designed by Fukuda Tōgo and Nomura Ichirō in a Renaissance Revival style using stone salvaged from the demolished Taipei city walls. In 1913 The building was extensively remodeled by Moriyama Matsunosuke into a lavish palace to serve as a venue for receiving Japanese royalty, including Crown Prince Hirohito on his 1923 tour of Taiwan (臺灣行啟). After 1945 it became the residence of the Taiwan Provincial Governor and was renamed Taipei Guesthouse in 1950. The 1952 Treaty of Taipei (中日和約), formally ending hostilities between the ROC and Japan, was signed here. Designated a national monument in 1998 and restored at a cost of over 400 million NTD in the early 2000s, it remains the official state guesthouse for foreign dignitaries and is only open to the public on select days.
