Meiji Sugar Company (明治製糖) opened a railway route from Yuanlin to Xihu Sugar Factory (溪湖糖廠) in Xihu in January 1919, laying three rails in two gauges so that state railway rolling stock could run directly onto the line via South Yuanlin Railway Station (南員林車站). In 1952 the line was folded into the North-South Parallel Preparatory Line (南北平行預備線), a strategic reserve assembled from sugar railways to shadow the west coast trunk railway. This line was known by several names over its history, but nowadays it is generally referred to as the Yuanlin Line (員林線). Passenger service ended in 1975 and freight in 1997, leaving the line abandoned for decades. Conversion of the right of way into bikeways began in 2008.
