Founded in 1813, one year after the Qing established Kavalan sub-prefecture (噶瑪蘭廳) in what is now Yilan City. Rebuilt at its current site in 1824 and expanded in 1927 using Zhaoying Temple (昭應宮) as an architectural model, the temple is noted for its “rival-side” (對場作) woodwork, a competitive format in which master carvers Chén Yínshēng (陳銀生) and Chén Nòngshī (陳弄獅) each led a team on opposite halves of the building. An adjacent hall dedicated to the City God’s wife features an elaborately carved eight-legged marriage bed.
