Originally established as a rice mill in 1942, the building was heavily damaged during the war, and a theater was built in one of the remaining structures in 1945. It was in continuous operation as a venue for traditional opera and performance as well as screening films until 1991. In the 2000s it was designated a historic building, restored, and opened to the public as a cultural attraction.
