An unranked Shinto shrine (無格社) established deep inside Taroko Gorge in December 1923 to commemorate the Japanese Governor-General Sakuma Samata’s victory over Taiwanese Indigenous in the brutal Truku War (太魯閣戰爭). Sometime after the ROC came to Taiwan it was transformed into Wen Tianxiang Park (文天祥公園). No part of the original shrine remains except for some landscaping and perhaps the underlying stone walls.
