Founded in 1767 as Ciji Temple at the old port of Bengang (笨港) and dedicated to Baosheng Dadi (保生大帝), a medicine god. After floods destroyed Bengang in 1799 the temple was rebuilt at its present site in Xingang, where it was completed in 1804 and given its current name by the naval commander Wang Delu (王得祿). The small temple on site today dates to 1907, when it was rebuilt at the urging of Lin Weichao (林維朝) after earthquakes in 1904 and 1906. The original temple was larger but road widening projects have encroached on the forecourt, reducing it to its current footprint.
