This area was once Bentian Pond (辨天池), a popular tourist attraction and dragonboat racing venue, with two islets known as Benten Island (辨天島) and Daikoku Island (大黑島). A small shrine to Benzaiten, a Japanese Buddhist and Shinto water deity, was built on the first island in 1924. The entire pond was later filled in to provide housing for people dislocated by the construction of Taoyuan International Airport in the late 1970s. The site is now the Yangming Community (陽明社區) on the south side of Taoyuan Railway Station.
