Established in 1918 by the Imperial Sugar Company (帝國製糖株式會社) as the Tanzaiqian Factory (潭仔墘工場), this sugar mill in Tanzi began with a daily crushing capacity of 750 tonnes, later raised to 1,600. It was acquired by Dai-Nippon Sugar (大日本製糖株式會社) in 1940 and suffered heavy damage from American bombing during World War 2. In the post-war era it was absorbed into Taiwan Sugar Corporation, resuming production in November 1947. Sugar manufacturing ceased in 1953, and the grounds served as a staff training institute until 1970, when the land was redeveloped as the Tanzi Export Processing Zone (潭子加工出口區), rebranded Tanzi Technology Industrial Park (潭子科技產業園區) in 2021. Faint traces of the original factory might be found in the surrounding area in the form of railway line abutments and other minor infrastructure.
