One of the three great historic temples of Shilin, Taipei, originating as an earth god shrine built by Zhangzhou settlers in the early eighteenth century and relocated to its current area in 1741 after a flood. The principal deity was changed to Shennong (神農大帝), the divine farmer, in 1812, giving the temple its present name. After the Zhangzhou-Quanzhou conflicts of 1859 razed Shilin’s old street, the rebuilt settlement was laid out around the temple with a broad forecourt for agricultural trade. It most recently earned heritage status as a municipal monument in 2015.
