Wanrong

Wànróng (萬榮), formerly Mǎlǐbāxī (馬里巴西), is a mountain township in west-central Hualien, predominantly home to the Truku (太魯閣) Indigenous people, with Bunun and Seediq communities in the southern villages. The township encompasses part of the former Lintianshan (林田山) forestry operation, one of eastern Taiwan’s largest logging enterprises during the Japanese colonial period. Remnants of its railway network, including the remote Xingao Guesthouse on the abandoned Gaodeng Line near Qicai Lake, survive deep in the mountains. Hongye Hot Springs, a Japanese colonial era resort in the township’s south, has operated for nearly a century.
