Fengbin

Fēngbīn (豐濱), formerly Māogōng (貓公), is a coastal township in eastern Hualien and the only one in the county situated entirely east of the Coastal Mountain Range along the Pacific shore. Regarded as one of the birthplaces of Amis culture, its population is approximately 80% Indigenous and a significant Kavalan (噶瑪蘭) community in Xinshe village traces its presence here to the Karewan Incident of 1878. The Tropic of Cancer crosses the township’s southern coast near Jingpu, where a white monument marks the line. Several Japanese colonial Shinto shrines survive in varying states along the coast, including the Daikōkō Shinto Shrine (1937), which retains its stone lanterns, ablution basin, and torii.
