Qishan Confucian Temple occupies about 4.1 hectares of Gushan Park (鼓山公園), making it the largest Confucian temple by area in Taiwan. Built on the site of the former Qishan Shinto Shrine (旗山神社), it was completed in 1985 under the direction of Kaohsiung County Magistrate Cai Mingyao (蔡明耀). The temple follows Song dynasty architectural style and is built into the hillside facing east, an unusual orientation among Taiwanese Confucian temples. Damaged in the 2016 Meinong earthquake, it was repaired and reopened before Teacher’s Day that year.
