Jingzaijiao Tile-Paved Salt Fields (井仔腳瓦盤鹽田) - Spectral Codex

The oldest surviving salt field in Taiwan, established in 1818 when Qing dynasty salt farming families relocated the twice-flooded Laidong Field (瀨東場) to Jingzaijiao (井仔腳) on the coast of Beimen, Tainan. Acquired by a Japanese salt manufacturer in 1919, it was later administered as part of the Beimen Saltworks and remained in production until 2000. The shallow evaporation beds are paved with broken tile shards, a technique known as wapan (瓦盤) that keeps the crystallizing salt free of sediment. Production resumed in 2003 as a tourism initiative and the site has since been extensively redeveloped; it was registered as a historic building in 2009 as the most intact tile-paved salt field in Taiwan.
