An offshoot of Guangfu Temple (廣福宮), jointly founded by settlers from Guangdong and Fujian in 1726 to venerate both Mazu and Sanshan Guowang (三山國王), the Three Mountain Kings. As the Fujian community became more established in Yuanlin they built their own temple to venerate Mazu, taking one of the two Mazu images with them, and the original was renamed Guangning Temple. It is a regular stop on the Dajia Mazu pilgrimage route, where returning pilgrims traditionally rest.
