Yuanlin Dizang Temple (員林地藏庵) - Spectral Codex

Founded in 1766 on the site of a mass grave beside Yuanlin Park (員林公園). Accounts of the burial differ: one traces the bones to a clash between settlers from Raoping (饒平) in Guangdong and the Plains Indigenous inhabitants of Yuanzailin (圓仔林), as Yuanlin was then known, while the temple attributes them to Hoklo-Hakka feuding the same year. In the latter version the ox carts hauling the remains out to Sankuaicuo (三塊厝) halted in front of this spot and could not be budged, so the dead were buried where they stood. Known as Dazhongye Temple (大眾爺廟) until it was renamed early in the Japanese colonial era, it remains the ritual center of the Ghost Month tradition of Zhongyuan Pudu (中元普渡) in Yuanlin.
