A black stone lighthouse on the summit of Dakoushan on the remote island of Wuqiu, midway between Xiamen and Fuzhou, completed in 1874 under the direction of David M. Henderson on behalf of Robert Hart’s Qing Imperial Maritime Customs Service. Damaged by American bombing during the Japanese wartime occupation, it was reluctantly extinguished in 1951 once Wuqiu became a fortified frontline outpost of the ROC, sitting dark for 66 years before being relit in 2017. The island remains a heavily restricted military zone with no regular civilian access.
