碧山國小

Bishan Elementary School

Founded during the Japanese colonial era as Qiangou Elementary School (乾溝國小) and renamed in 1971, this was a single-storey mountain school serving the farming households of Bishan Village (碧山村), which was at that time the largest settlement in this corner of Shiding, with more than a thousand residents growing oranges and tea. Construction of Feitsui Reservoir (翡翠水庫) emptied the valley: enrollment collapsed as families were resettled and the campus was eventually submerged around the end of 1985. Classrooms, dormitories, and a water tower surfaced for two months during the drought of 2002, prompting comparisons with Atlantis in the local press. The site sits within restricted catchment waters, and former residents are permitted to return to the shoreline only once a year, for Tomb-Sweeping Day. Note: the location is exact as it was derived from old maps from the 1970s.
