Sanxia Loyalty Monument was erected in 1923 on the slopes of Yuanshan (鳶山) in Sanxia to commemorate 35 Japanese soldiers killed in the Battle of Long’enpu (隆恩埔戰役) on July 13th, 1895, when local militia ambushed a 39-man supply convoy on the river during the Yiwei War. Built of granite quarried in Shilin and standing about 11 feet tall, it carried an inscription by Fukuda Masatarō (福田雅太郎), commander of the Taiwan Army, and hosted an annual memorial rite for the remainder of the Japanese colonial era. The monument was demolished after the war; a buried base thought to belong to it was identified in Zhongshan Park (中山公園) in 2013.
