Established in 1959 with the assistance of USAID, this tuberculosis sanatorium was originally a monastery before it was donated to the an association of Catholic doctors (靈醫會) and converted into the Wanshan Branch of St. Mary’s Hospital (聖母醫院丸山分院), with its headquarters in nearby Luodong. It was in continuous use for treating patients until perhaps the 1970s, when tuberculosis was nearly eradicated in Taiwan. Later on it was repurposed for use as a retirement home before it was eventually abandoned to the elements for decades. It has long been a popular attraction for urban explorers, graffiti artists, airsoft players, and ghost hunters. As of 2024 it is behind a gate and guarded.
