Běitóu (北投) is a suburban district in northern Taipei famous for its historic hot springs and the vast expanse of Yangmingshan. Thermal Valley, with its distinctive aquamarine waters and photogenic steam, is one of the district’s leading attractions. During the Japanese colonial era the district developed as a hot springs resort, with numerous bathhouses and inns catering to visitors seeking the therapeutic waters. In the post-war era Yangmingshan was developed for use by the Ministry of National Defense and later the National Assembly, which convened at the Chung-Shan Building, completed in a Chinese renaissance style in 1965 and now featured on the 100 NT banknote.
