The farmers’ association of Puzi completed this livestock market in November 1977, replacing an earlier market established in 1964 with a circular auction hall equipped for computerized bidding, one of many such facilities built across Taiwan as the hog trade modernized in the 1970s. Reorganized as Chiayi County Meat Market (嘉義縣肉品市場) in 1984, it sold close to a thousand hogs a day at its peak before ceasing operations in September 2022, and was demolished later that year to make way for a modern slaughterhouse and cold chain facility scheduled to open in 2030.
