One of many public bathhouses built across Taiwan after the local government reforms of 1920 transferred their operation to town and village authorities. From 1921 such facilities were folded into social programs of the Japanese colonial era and promoted to residents as a means of instilling hygienic habits. This particular bathhouse standing on the west side of what is now Nanzi East Street (楠梓東街) in Nanzi opened in March 1923, not far from the public market. Whether the building on the site today is the original converted into shops is unclear.
