Considered the mythological origin place of the Paiwan people, Kapayuwanan was historically one of the largest Paiwan settlements with approximately 300 stone slate homes and over 2,000 residents. Referenced as Pachiwan in Dutch colonial era records, the community was relocated in 1974. Twelve stone slate houses were later restored as a demonstration project for indigenous settlement reconstruction. Also known as Old Paiwan (舊排灣).
