Built in 1968, Dade Bridge (大德橋) is a small pedestrian-only shortcut over the fetid Xiding River (西定河), which flows beneath the Sanliandong Buildings as Xuchuan River (旭川河) on its way to the harbour. It connects with Cowboy Street (牛仔街) on the west to Chenggong First Road (成功一路) to the east and is located beneath the Xiding Viaduct (西定高架道路), which continues through downtown Keelung.

This particular scene became briefly internet famous when it was posted to an unflattering subreddit and widely mocked for its dreary aesthetic1. One commenter even noticed a rat along the margins of the photo. There’s no defending this scene; it is indeed pretty grim. Even so, it makes for an interesting shortcut from one part of the city to another.

The river disappears beneath Ren’ai Bridge (仁愛橋) and flows beneath the Sanliandong Buildings.
