A granite lighthouse standing on the eastern bluff of Dongju Island, the southernmost of the inhabited Matsu Islands, established in 1872. It belongs to the second batch of Western-style lighthouses commissioned along the southeast Chinese coast and the Taiwan Strait by the Qing Imperial Maritime Customs Service under Robert Hart, following the navigation aid provisions of the post-Opium War treaties. Originally known as Dongquan Lighthouse (東犬燈塔) after the older name of the island, it is the most geographically distant national monument from the Taiwanese mainland.
