Juguang

Juguang (莒光), also spelled Chukuang, is a rural township in Lienchiang County consisting of two main islands, Dongju (東莒) and Xiju (西莒), along with several smaller islets. Located in the southern part of the Matsu archipelago in the East China Sea, the township was historically known as Baiquan (白犬), “White Dogs”, due to the white waves that crash against the rocky shores, resembling running white dogs when viewed from a distance.

Juguang is home to the historic Dongju Lighthouse (東莒燈塔), built during the Qing Dynasty in 1872, which stands as the oldest lighthouse in Taiwan and continues to guide maritime traffic through the Taiwan Strait. The township preserves its traditional Eastern Min fishing culture while maintaining numerous military fortifications that reflect its strategic importance during periods of cross-strait tension.
