Hualien Golf Club

Karenkō Golf Course (花蓮港高爾夫球場) was completed in 1928 on the Milun (米崙) plateau, the first golf course in eastern Taiwan. This clubhouse followed in 1935 when the course was expanded to 18 holes. Designed by staff of the local railway office, it has a streamlined modernist form with reinforced concrete walls, arched windows and entrance, and a curved roof supported by Western-style timber trusses. The Japanese military requisitioned the course during World War 2 and the ROC Navy occupied it in the post-war period. The club reopened in 1970, by which time the building’s central dome had been lost and it served as a storage shed. It was nearly auctioned off over unpaid taxes in 2019 before being designated a county monument that December, the only surviving golf clubhouse in Taiwan from the Japanese colonial era.
