Hengshan Jianfeng Coal Mine

Sprawling ruins of an old coal mine in Hengshan, first registered as a mining concession in 1922 during the Japanese colonial era. The surviving site dates to the post-war Hexing Coal Mine (合興煤礦), later reorganized as Jianfeng, which opened its main inclined shaft in 1962 and produced around 415,000 tonnes of coal before bricking up the portal on closure in 1989. In 2015 the Hengshan Township Office obtained Hakka Affairs Council funding to stabilize the remaining brick and concrete structures, among them a winding house, water tower, bathhouse, and coal-washing plant. Much of it has been cleaned up, but there is little information on site to indicate what the function of the different structures were.
