A wall of sea cliffs on the Pacific coast of Xiulin, Hualien, where the eastern flank of Qingshui Mountain (清水山) falls from 2,408 meters almost straight into the ocean. Formed of marble and gneiss dense enough to hold a near-vertical face against the surf, the cliffs run for about 12 kilometers from Heren (和仁) south to Chongde (崇德). The Suhua Highway (蘇花公路) was cut directly into the cliffside, though tunnels have since bypassed the most exposed stretches, among them the segment around the old Qingshui Tunnel. The best place to view the cliff is Xiaoqingshui Lookout (小清水休憩區), accessible from the highway.
