Songyou Community

This hillside is covered with many illegal homes, most of them built by ROC military veterans subsisting on meager pensions, and others who may have been down on their luck at some point. Although the entire community is at risk of landslides the city has been slow to address the situation as many of the people living here don’t have the means to relocate. There is also something to be said for this impoverished community incongruously located so closely to Taipei 101 and the most expensive real estate in the country. More recently it seems to have become known as Hulin Treasure Hill (虎林寶藏巖), a play on the Treasure Hill in Gongguan, which had similar origins.
