Founded in 1738 by Quanzhou settlers in Bangka, the port settlement that grew into Wanhua, this Guanyin temple has been the religious and political center of the district for nearly three centuries. The present complex was largely shaped by a 1919 reconstruction under master architect Wang Yishun (王益順). The main hall was destroyed in the Taipei Air Raid of May 1945 and rebuilt between 1953 and 1959 by Wang’s grand-nephew Wang Shinan (王世南). Its heritage status was upgraded from a municipal to a national monument in November 2018.
