Yuliao Site

A late Neolithic archaeological site in Taibao, discovered around 1940 by Yoshida Shigeru (吉田茂), a teacher at the Chiayi agricultural school, and named by the ethnologist Kano Tadao (鹿野忠雄). It contains two cultural layers, the lower belonging to the Niuchouzi pottery culture and the upper to the Yuliao phase of the Dahu culture. The site drew little attention until 2003, when road construction and a planned columbarium prompted residents to campaign for its protection, and it was designated in 2009. Most of it remains under sugarcane. There is a small monument and plaque by the roadside but otherwise not much to see.
