A monument built in 1952 beside a temple venerating Guanyin in Pingxi to honour Pan Ping-chu (潘炳燭), who found coal at Shidi (石底) in 1907 and ceded his mining rights without charge to the brothers Yen Yun-nien (顏雲年) and Yen Kuo-nien (顏國年). At Pan’s suggestion Yen Yun-nien built a railway into the valley, now the Pingxi Line (平溪線) ending at Jingtong Railway Station, and Pingxi became a string of mining settlements until its last colliery closed in 1998. New Taipei City registered the monument as a historic building in 2012.
