Zhanghu Elementary School (樟湖國小) traces its origins to a 1930s language instruction site in the hills of Gukeng, Yunlin, formalized in 1940 as a branch of Dahudi Public School (大湖底公學校). The current campus was rebuilt post-war and went through numerous name changes before enrollment collapsed in the late 1990s, with only one graduate in 1998. The 921 earthquake in 1999 prompted an attempt to reinvent the school around ecological education, but a 2009 geological survey following Typhoon Morakot identified the site as unstable and the school relocated to a new campus in 2013. The buildings sat largely sealed until 2017, when authorities began permitting limited use by community workshops and senior services.
