A public market on Dihua Street in Dadaocheng (大稻埕), which moved to this site in 1908 and took the name Eiraku-chō Market (永樂町市場) in 1933, by which time it was already the center of the city’s fabric trade. Taiwanese merchants took over from departing Japanese firms after the war, and several textile conglomerates, among them Shin Kong, Nan Ya, and Far Eastern, got their start here. The original wooden market was demolished in 1982 and replaced in 1985 by the present nine-storey building, with fresh food on the ground floor and fabric wholesalers on the two floors above.

I am a web application developer, photojournalist, urban explorer, and history enthusiast passionate about the open web and documenting my experiences on this planet. This project was founded in the early 2010s and has evolved into a sort of personal Wikipedia of places that interest me (and often the photographs I’ve taken there). I’m originally from Toronto, Canada, but spend most of my time residing in Taiwan.
