A wooden theater was constructed on this site in the Japanese colonial era. In the post-war period it was requisitioned by the military for use as a detention center following the 228 Incident and declaration of martial law. As detention facilitiesin Ankeng were built this site was cleared and the new Xindian Theater (新店戲院) was built on the site in 1958. Perhaps because the name had already been claimed for another theater up the road it was more generally known as Bitan Theater (碧潭戲院) for much of its operating history. Eventually it was demolished and replaced by a public market building (新店區公有碧潭零售市場), though the exact timing is unclear.
