Opened in December 2015 as a museum of Asian art and culture, this 70-hectare branch of the National Palace Museum occupies former sugarcane fields of Suantou Sugar Factory in Taibao. The government selected the site in 2003 to improve cultural equity between north and south Taiwan, but the project ran years behind its original 2008 target. Kris Yao (姚仁喜) designed the main building, whose three interlocking volumes evoke the brushstrokes of ink calligraphy.
