Originally established in 1921, this shrine was dedicated to the Shinto god of learning. The surrounding district was renamed Tenjin-chō (天神町) in 1931 in honor of the shrine. In September 1934 it was relocated to a hillside near present-day Mingchuan Junior High School (銘傳國中). The shrine was destroyed after the war and replaced by Nanling Temple (南靈宮). Nothing remains of the original shrine.
