A granite stele erected in November 1922 by Fenyuan village head Zhang Chunbo (張春波) and other local notables in memory of Hoshiyama Kagemori (星山景盛), a Kagoshima-born police patrolman shot dead here on October 9th, 1897, in a skirmish with a dozen armed men. The inscription calls his killers “bandits”, although they may have been insurgents resisting Japanese rule. It is also riddled with errors: the reverse miscarves his surname as Kageyama (景山) and dates his death to January, five months before he was supposedly appointed to the force.
