Originally built around 1733 and fortified in 1841 by Yáo Yíng (姚瑩) as one of 17 coastal fortifications erected in response to the Opium War. Later named “minor” in contrast to the nearby “major fort” at Èrkūnshēn (二鯤鯓砲臺), better known as Eternal Golden Castle. A late example of traditional Chinese-style fortification predating the introduction of Western designs, it also bears witness to the dramatic retreat of the Anping coastline, which once bordered on open sea.
