Completed in 1875, this was a trading house for the German company Julius Mannich & Co. established after the Treaty of Tientsin opened Anping to foreign trade in 1858. It mainly traded in sugar and camphor. After Taiwan was conquered by Japan in 1895 foreign trade was drastically curtailed and the company soon withdrew. The colonial government repurposed the building as a government office. In the post-war era it became a residence for the administrator of the nearby salt production fields.
