A free aviary opened by the Nantou County Government in 1968 on the northeastern shore of Sun Moon Lake, once home to some 200 peacocks and other birds. The shoreline below is a ritual site where the Indigenous Thao (邵族) make annual offerings to their ancestral spirits. In 2016 the county closed the park and sold off its birds to make way for a lakefront hotel, a plan the Thao rejected unanimously. Their attempt to secure a say over the site by designating it traditional territory was overturned on procedural grounds in 2021, though the hotel’s environmental impact assessment was separately struck down in court.
