Established in 1914 as the Yiyuan Rice and Sugar Company’s Shalu Plant (億源米糖株式會社沙轆工場) in Shalu, Taichung. Mitsui acquired the factory in 1919 and reorganized it as Shalu Sugar Manufacturing (沙轆製糖株式會社). It passed to Dai-Nippon Sugar (大日本製糖株式會社) in 1939 and was renamed Shalu Sugar Factory (沙鹿製糖所). In 1942, as work began on Niitaka Port (新高港), Dai-Nippon sold the site to Kao Organic (花王有機株式會社). The grounds are now occupied by Fwusow Industrial Co. (福壽實業). No trace of the colonial era factory is known to remain.
